Faculty Achievements 07-08

NANCY ANDERSON took over the lead role in developing and presenting the PhD program for state approval. While this in itself could be seen as the singular accomplishment for the year, Nancy has submitted articles in scholarly journals, presented papers or as an invited participant at conferences in Naples, Italy and Columbia, SC., two manuscripts to referees for future publication, and another chapter in the Educated Eye, for which she is a co-editor due for publication in 2009.

SYLVIE BELANGER had a solo exhibit at Big Orbit Gallery in Buffalo as part of the larger Beyond in Western NY. She has also participated in group shows in the US and abroad, lectured in Paris at L’Ecole Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris and Japan at Azimino Art Center where she was a guest artist.

BINGYI HUANG had solo shows in NYC, Buffalo, and Beijing and group shows in Beijing and Korea. She curated an exhibit of Wang Luyan’s paintings and presented conference papers as well as non-conference lectures at Beijing, Today Art Museum and Mount Holyoke College.

GEORGE HUGHES exhibited in NYC, Germany, and Austria and did a performance in Buffalo. He also placed paintings in collections abroad and lectured at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.

JOAN LINDER had a solo show in NYC at Mixed Greens and group exhibits in Chicago and NYC. She lectured at Dowling College and Suffolk County Community College and received the Smack Mellon Artist Residency Fellowship. Her work was included in the textbook, Drawing, a Contemporary Approach.

MEGAN MICHALAK appeared in “New American Talent” in Texas venues and in “Here and Elsewhere” at the Bronx Museum of the Arts as well as exhibits in Connecticut. Her work was reviewed in the NY Times and she was a guest lecturer in Portugal.

GARY NICKARD had numerous exhibitions at sites in the US and Canada including: SPACES, Cleveland, OH, Stewart Hall Gallery, Montreal, Quebec. He also gave several lectures including one at The Institute at the Center for Inquiry, Buffalo, NY.

ELIZABETH OTTO submitted articles for publication and reviewed work for national professional periodicals. She published a conference abstracts, was the commentator for the German Studies Association Annual Conference and lectured in Europe and the US. She was the recipient of the UB Humanities Faculty Fellowship Award.

REINHARD REITZENSTEIN participated in a number of group shows in Canada including The Museum of Art, Joliette, Quebec, Canada and the US at the Mansfield Art Center in Mansfield, OH and also did a number of sound performances, commissions, lectures, and curated exhibitions in both countries.

STEPHANIE ROTHENBERG had an exhibit at Eyebeam 2008 Sundance Film Festival, participated in Beyond/In Western NY, in Buffalo, in Brooklyn and Toronto at the Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Center, and screened “Invisible Threads” in Washington, D.C. She participated in FLEFF and lectured in NYC as well as receiving awards from Ithaca College.

BEN VAN DYKE had a solo exhibit at Kendall College of Art and Design, was a Fulbright participant and organized the upcoming TYPE/CON conference and exhibit that will be at UB Center for the Arts summer 08.

CHARLES CARMAN published his conference abstract, “Albert and Nicholas of Cusa Perspective as Coincidence of Opposites,” Explorations in Renaissance Culture, submitted two other articles for publication, abstracts, book reviews, and presented at conferences in the US, Canada and England.

MILLIE CHEN was in five solo or collaborative exhibitions in France at Centre Culturel Canadien, Paris and Canada at Sound Symposium, St. John’s, Newfoundland as well as three group exhibits. Millie also produced an exhibition catalog and book chapters pending publication by Cornell University Press. In addition she has undertaken curatorial projects and film screenings. Her professional work was supported by travel and publication grants from CAS.

STEVEN KURTZ was represented by nine exhibitions a performance, three screenings of his work, and ten lectures in the US and several significant venues in Europe at various sites including Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki., The Royal Danish Art Academy, Copenhagen. Additionally, he has published Marching Plague: Germ Warfare and Global Public Health, and has produced numerous articles for publication.

TONY ROZAK developed curriculum for Communication Design and represented the department at “Art/Design/ Knowledge: Developing a Leadership Position in Graduate Education at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

PAUL VANOUSE exhibitions in China, Australia, and the US, delivered several conference papers in the US, Europe, and South America and lectured in the US and the Czech Republic. Paul received an Emerging Fields Grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, one of only six awarded and the Creative Capital Foundation.

ADELE HENDERSON showed work in numerous exhibitions including: 7th Lessedra World Art Print Annual, in Sofia, Bulgaria, at Artspace, New Haven, CT, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. She also participated in the Southern Graphics Council Conference in Richmond, Virginia.

JACK QUINAN received an Outstanding Academic Title award from Choice magazine for his monograph, “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House: Architecture as Portraiture.” Jack also produced an additional monograph, edited a book, wrote articles for scholarly journals, contributed several book reviews, presented two conference papers, and was invited to speak at prominent venues.

DAVID SCHIRM was invited to speak Northern Illinois University and had exhibits at the Schweinfurth Art Center and the Big Orbit Gallery. Performed a departmental comprehensive review of F.I.T’s Department of Fine Arts.

VANCE WATROUS published articles in scholarly journals and presented several conference papers at Archaeological Institute of America. He was awarded three grants related to Aegean prehistory by the Institute for Aegean Prehistory.
