Summer Course Announcement: ART 350 2D Animation (Special Topics)

The course will focus on creating 2D animation within the context of the classical principles of animation applied in a digital environment. We’ll explore Adobe Flash and the unique abilities that it offers the animator, including special effects and interactivity.

Some of the topics covered will include:

• Understanding how physics applies to objects in motion
• Using psychology to convincingly exaggerate or break the rules of physics
• Disney’s “12 Principles of Animation”
• Storyboarding
• Creating micro-narratives
• Drawing in Flash
• Using Symbols and Interactivity
• Special Effects
• Working with Graphics
• Working with Sound
• Using ActionScript to control movie behavior

Class time will consist of:

• discussion of principles and techniques
• screening examples of classic and contemporary animation
• technical tutorials and exercises
• work on creative projects
