Jolene
Rickard Bio Jolene Rickard, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the departments of art and art history at SUNY Buffalo. Theoretically engaged in issues relevant to post to neo coloniality, Rickard is an artist, curator and historian concentrating on the aesthetic practice of First Nations and Indigenous peoples within a global context. Her photographic installations have been exhibited at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Quebec, (Rez X), Barbican Art Center in London, England, (Native Nations), Joseph Gross Gallery at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Ansel Adams Center For Photography, San Francisco, the Houston Center for Photography, C.E.P.A, Buffalo, Light Works, Syracuse, Exit Art, New York City and many more. Rickard co-curated an international traveling exhibit, "Across Borders: Beadwork In Iroquois Life," Venues include, NMAI: the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City, ROM: the Royal Ontario Museum of Art in Toronto, CMC: the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, Canada, Castillani Art Museum, Lewiston, New York, and the McCord Museum, Quebec. Currently, Rickard is a guest curator for the $300 million dollar new Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C, “The National Museum of the American Indian,” scheduled to open fall of 2004. Publications include; Native Nations, APERTURE "Stronghearts," Lucy Lippard's edited text, Partial Recall, and Lure of the Local, Diana Burgess Fuller’s Art/Women/California, Margo Machida and Elaine Kim’s Fresh Talk, Daring Gazes, and Felix: Journal of Media and Communication, to mention a few. Rickard is on the board of the New York State Historical Association,
member of the College Art Association, Native Art Association and the
Society for Photographic Educators and is a founding boardmember of
the Otsego Institute of Native American Art History. |
