After receiving his bachelors degree, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia for two years and then taught American Literature and English in a small Chinese city for another two years. Upon returning from China in 1996, he began to study at the New York Academy of Art Graduate School of Figurative Art and received a Masters in Figurative studies in 1999. He was awarded the Tallix Foundry Prize at the 1998 National Sculpture Society Annual Exhibition and the Walker Hancock Memorial Award at the 1999 National Sculpture Contest.
