Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

The Bachelor of Fine Arts program allows for the most extensive immersion in the study of art. Nearly two-thirds of the student's total undergraduate credits are earned acquiring a broad background in the fine arts and an intensive specialization in Communication Design, Emerging Practices, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, or Sculpture.

Requirements for Graduation

Majors must maintain a 2.5 GPA for all combined courses required for the B.F.A. degree. This includes art history courses, as well as studio art courses.

Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art (BA)

The Bachelor of Arts program is designed for students who are interested in combining studies in the humanities or sciences with a concentration in Communication Design, Photography, or General Studio. Approximately one-third of a student's undergraduate study is spent on a specialization in one of these areas. Students who elect the BA may choose a minor or plan a joint major with another department.

Requirements for Graduation

Majors must maintain a 2.5 GPA for all combined courses required for the BA degree. This includes art history courses, as well as studio art courses.

Bachelor of Arts in Art History (BA)

Majors begin by taking three survey courses (AHI 101, AHI 102, and AHI 103) that introduce the issues and major monuments of art history. Building on this foundation, students complete six upper-level courses, distributed among four geographic areas: the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. These advanced courses provide more focused examinations of the history and concerns of specific societies. Majors are additionally required to take a pro-seminar, which provides a basic introduction to the debates and methods of the field; a methods course; and four sequential semesters of language study, or the equivalent. While a senior honors thesis is not required, majors are encouraged to consider undertaking such a project during their final year.
